Thanks to the support of European Fund for the Balkans, we managed to create the basis for the social mechanism which has a goal to reforest devastated and burned areas. By the end of 2024, our goal is to plant 600,000 autochthonous species of trees, symbolically representing one citizen per tree. The final goal is to create a green barrier, which will lessen the effects of climate change. We know that the green area and forests affect climate change and the summer temperatures, and also the temperature in winter months, when we have winds and other unwanted weather conditions.
MappingIn order to know which places are a priority for planting, we had to map out the devastated areas. We did that by creating a database about wildfires, plant species and the areas themselves. We did the mapping with the use of drones, satellite footage and terrain work of young biologists. Unfortunately, the state did not have enough data to allow us to start the process immediately, so we had to collect the information ourselves.
By law, reforestation must be done with autochthonous species and seed material with specific genetic origin. Unfortunately, the commercial and state nursery did not have autochthonous species. Because of this we started the action of collecting the seeds of oak, Bosnian pine, celtis, beech and chestnut trees. Our bank of seeds protects seeds until the moment of sprouting and planting, and that must be done in special conditions. In only two months we have managed to collect 1,300kg of oak seed, and 1,800kg of Bosnian pine seeds, which is enough for the success of more than 300,000 trees. It is of importance to track the origin and coordinates of the seed, and to make a database of it, so that the plants of those seeds can be returned to their place of origin. All of this was done with the advice of biologists and foresters, who followed the rules that autochthonous species with specific origin are resistant to climate changes.
Active society
Through this whole process we are making sure to include as many citizens as we can. For now, over 300 adult citizens and aprox. 600 children have joined us in our action. Our goal is to have our idea taken over by local communities, so we started a co-operation with NGOs from local communities from Bare Kraljske, Kuči, Ulcinj, Berane, Bijelo Polje and Tivat. The goal is to form mini nurseries in every town.
Planting the green mind - Education
From local to regionalWe would be very happy if this idea spreads regionally and we want to co-operate with similar organizations in the region. We have already connected with the Green Hub in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, but we want to connect with other local communities in the region as well as other NGOs to spread this idea, because it's not enough to change the micro climate. We must fight against the global climate change in as many regions as possible. This is an opportunity to unite Balkan communities in order to fight against the climate change and to fight for the existence of our future generations.
